State vs Mann

Updated: Oct 14, 2018

State Vs Mann was a case that we debated over in class. We set up the class as if it were a court room and one group protested for Mann and one group protested for State. This case is a story about a male slave owner named John Mann that was borrowing a slave from his friend and that female slave named Lydia tried running away. Before she was able to, John Mann shot and killed her. Now this debate was not about the killing, it was about John Manns penalty which was a five dollar fine. John Mann did not believe he should have to pay for anything. This was a very difficult subject to discuss and have to believe in (which our group had to). We had to vouch for a man who killed an innocent lady for trying to become free. The state group did a amazing job and used information including other cases similar to this one. With it being 2018 it can be hard to agree with a man who had committed murder but being able to take out the fact it is 2018 and talk about history as if it was present making understanding about it so much easier. Down below is a picture taken during the debate.
